New community center offers inmates chance to get jobs, avoid committing crimes

A 38-year-old Reading man wanted to tidy up his room in the new Berks County Community Reentry Center before accepting visitors Wednesday.

"May I clean up first?" Hamilton Newton, jokingly asked during a media tour of the center, which opened May 2 in Bern Township.

Newton is one of the 74 inmates from the county jail transferred to the center, which is designed to help inmates get jobs and avoid committing more crimes
